BCPS Southwest "Planning Area"

by: Maggie Litz Domanowski (Opinions reflected in this posted are of Maggie Litz Domanowski and are not reflective of the Baltimore County Board of Education.)

Baltimore County Public Schools are split up into five "planning areas:" Southwest, Northwest, Central, Southeast, and Northeast. This is part one of five blogs posts covering the composition of each strategic planning area within BCPS.

Southwest Planning Area feeder pattern by receiving high school (2024-2025)

There are a total of 30 schools that considered to be within the Southwest Planning Area boundary. Among those 20 Elementary, six Middle and four High schools, 20,866 BCPS students were in enrolled in 2025. Between 2020 and 2025, Southwest area schools received over $16 million in school allocation funding, nearly $540,000 per school or $773 per student.

Of the four Southwest planning area receiver high schools; Lansdowne, Catonsville, Woodlawn, and Western School of Technology, three are traditional public and one is magnet school. As a public magnet high school, Western Tech does not have a feeder pattern and only accepts students by application only. All Western School of Technology students are provided BCPS transportation to and from their "home" school. A student's home school is the school assigned to them according their home address.

Western School of Technology was ranked the 5th best Maryland public high, and 274th Nationally in 2025. All 953 enrolled students were accepted through BCPS's Magnet application process. All students who apply, must adhere to the residency requirements of a Baltimore County Public School, but they are not required to live within a specific school boundary or planning area.
